FAQ - Shepherd International Movers

Guiding You Through Your Overseas Move.

International Transit: Sea vs. Air

It usually comes down to how much you are moving and how fast you need it there. Sea freight is the most affordable way to move a large household, but cargo ships take time to cross the ocean. Air freight is much faster, but it costs a premium. We typically recommend air freight for smaller shipments, urgent corporate moves, or the essential items you need on day one.

Yes, we handle that heavy lifting for you. Every single country has its own strict import laws, taxes, and restricted items. We guide you through the exact documentation needed for your specific destination to ensure your shipment clears customs smoothly and doesn’t get stuck at the border.

Corporate Relocations

We do. Moving internationally for work adds an extra layer of pressure because you need to hit the ground running at your new job. We coordinate directly with you (and your employer or HR department, if needed) to ensure your household items arrive on schedule. Our goal is to minimize your downtime so you can focus entirely on your career transition.

Export Packing & Protection

Very different. Your belongings are going to be loaded onto cargo ships or planes, lifted by cranes, and subjected to varying climates. Standard cardboard boxes and light tape won’t cut it. Our team uses specialized “export packing” techniques, heavy-duty wrapping, and custom-built wooden crates to ensure your items survive the global journey perfectly intact.

We strongly advise against it for international moves. Foreign customs agents require a highly detailed, professional inventory list of everything entering their country. If you pack the boxes yourself, customs is much more likely to open, heavily inspect, and delay your shipment. Having our licensed crew pack and document your belongings ensures a much faster, easier clearance process.

Overseas Vehicle Shipping

Yes, we can manage your vehicle shipping right alongside your household belongings. We make sure your car is securely loaded and braced inside an ocean container. Before we ship, we will also help you verify that your specific make and model actually meets the local emissions and import laws of your destination country.

No, this is a very strict rule. International maritime law and customs regulations require that vehicles be shipped completely empty of personal belongings. The only things allowed in the car are the factory spare tire, the jack, and the owner’s manual. Leaving personal items in the trunk or backseat will result in heavy fines and major delays at the port.
